P-3 and the Big Trip : Tekonsha 90195 P3 Electronic Brake Control
I recently upgraded from a Draw-Tite Activator II Brake Controller Model 5500 to the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 brake controller but never had a chance to test it out until today when I took the rig out to calibrate the brake controller. Prior to the Activator II I had an equivalent Hayes brake controller on my previous tow vehicle (TV).
The decision to get the P3 was largely due to the feedback online as well as the fact that the display was at the front of the controller meaning I could mount it as snugly as I wanted to the sloped knee panel under the steering wheel and hence out of the way of my knees.
All I can say is the difference is night and day. After I got out of the truck I was grinning from ear to ear! No more grabby braking at slow speeds or during backing up. Everything was smooth as can be. Even though I have not taken the rig on the highway yet, I anticipate no problems whatsoever based on the experience so far.
The Activator II is a time delayed brake controller, meaning that power is set at a predetermined rate that you control at the controller. On the other hand the P3 is a proportional controller which is supposed to sense the rate of deceleration and proportionally send a corresponding electrical voltage to the trailer brakes. This results in a smoother braking experience especially when in traffic, backing up and other low-speed events. It works.
Calibrating it was a breeze. I just went to an abandoned parking lot, set the controller to 6 as instructed and did a test run up to 25 mph before applying the manual level fully (no TV braking). No lockup of trailer brakes. I changed the level to 6.4 and did another run producing lockup of the trailer brakes. Finally settled on 6.3. I decided to leave the Boost on level B2 although I could see using level B1 as the trailer is one of the lighter ones around.
When I brought the trailer back to the storage facility I was able to back into my spot with zero grabbing of the trailer brakes .... all smooth as butter.
This is the best puchase I have made in a long time. This is a great product.
